Good Day,

My name is Lory Stewart and I am currently living and working on Cape Cod. I live in the town of Truro that is located within the boundaries of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

I work for a regional school district as the Coordinator of Instructional Technology. I am a 2001 graduate of the MAT program from The Graduate Center at Marlboro College. Because of that program I was able to land my dream job in the dream location. When I was enrolled in the MAT program I lived in Wilmington, Vermont. For personal reasons I had a desire to re-locate back to Cape Cod where I had family and friends.

In January 2006, I enrolled in a class at the Grad Center. It was a class in using the CMS (course management system) MOODLE. I learned a great deal. At the end of the class I learned that starting in May the Grad Center was running re-designed Designs II class with a content I had a great interest in learning more about. My experience with the networks class, having been so positive, I signed up. The content is very exciting to me pedagogically and very enlightening!!! The concept of the Read/Write Web is phenomenal and I can see so many practical applications in the classroom. I need to increase my comfort zone way higher than it is for me today in order to get people to use it.

As I said before, I had a huge success with my MOODLE!!! I have a flourishing summer reading program going on at my high school with hundreds of users and over fifty facilitators. I just hope that I can get up to speed as well with these online tools. So far, I am struggling. I am hoping it is that I am so stressed out with the end of the school year and have so much to do that I will be able to hang in and catch up. I hate catch up.

“Children are not vessels to be filled but lamps to be lit”

I use this quote in my web based email. I find it fits with the read/write web. This technology ignites a desire for self-motivated student centered learning.

Well I have missed the boat already since this is my first post and I should be well on my way thru a second. I see this blog as my way of reflecting on this course content and my learning in the class. The content is great and I started out of the gate way late. Playing catch up is going to be hard but not impossible.

We certainily have a prolific group. I wish I knew more about each person. I suppose if I knew how to read the resumes I would find out who everyone is and what they do. I have many questions to ask tomorrow. FC has changed much in my five year absence from its use. I need some help there.

I am uncertain whether these blogs are intended for reading other than by Elaine. I need the answer to that one as well.

This course is turning more towards pedagogy than I had originally thought. This is good. I need to keep sharp on that as well. It would seem that these tools would be put to good use in differentiated instruction.

I am liking the idea that there is someone in the class with a focus on assistive technology. That perspective always needs consideration, particularly in the public school environment.

An observation….nothing seems to change and we all seem to continually grapple with the same, conficts and frustrations. It is the same everywhere not enough money, not enough pd, poor or little planning for change and the future, regulations and mandates forced down our throats, lack of time; the list goes on. Somehow I would think there would have been some changes.

Good day,

I am taking a course on new tools for education on the web. I would love to know what other educators think about blogging as an educational tool. Or maybe you know of another blog that talks about this subject that I should join. Thanks
